Design Meltdown 2010
Like most personal projects it is more often beneficial to just push the product out the door and get it going; so here goes with DMD 2010. Design Meltdown has been one of the most fun projects I have ever worked on. It turned into a book, it lead me to countless contacts, and has kept me in tune to the web design industry in a way I could not have imagined.
The down side to all this is that DMD has required many hours of work; in particular countless hours of sifting through sites to catalog them. As happens, life has caught up with me. In particular his name is Jack and he is now 1 year old. So I had to rethink Design Meltdown, or let it die.
Of course the notion of letting it die is horrible. So there are two changes in order:
1. Design Meltdown is going to become an annual site. This simply means I will reset things each year. This solves the problem of things getting large and unmanageable. Each year I can change directions or modify how the site works. Plus it makes each sub site a snapshot in time for that year. This also enables the most recent site to be more current and less chance of users looking at dated styles and content.
2. For 2010 the site will focus on linking to outside articles. I will still catalog and comment on these collections. But the collections will not be mine or created by me (of course I will probably throw in a few sets of my own from time to time). So DMD 2010 will be a directory of styles the same as it always has, but all created by readers and bloggers. Feel free to send me a link to your recent posts on design trends etc.
So I hope you enjoy the new flavor of DMD, and as always, I appreciate the massive loyalty my readers have shown.
And I almost forgot, DMD 2010 is on WordPress! The original site was hand built and a total mess. So I finally get to blog on a real platform…thank heaven!

Haven’t you thought about opening the site for other bloggers, with you as the chief editor? DMD must not die!
If this is not an option for you, option 1 would be my first choice. Users who find old content and taking it for new can’t read. They don’t deserve it to be helped
Thnx for all your work so far!
I will indeed open it up to other bloggers. Any one with an interest should contact me. Either for a single article or for an ongoing ability to write for the site. Just give me a shout.
Soooooo… DMD is going to be yet another blog that doesn’t compile any of it’s own content, rather link to other blogs’ “best of” lists.
This would explain the flood of DMD posts in my RSS Reader.
Well, sort of. If you look at how DMD started I created massive catalogs of sites in various styles or using various design elements. When I started this there were a lot less people doing so. Now a days Tons of people are writing and collecting in similar ways. This combined with my lack of time lead me to this decision. I am basically going to catalog articles that are using the same approach that I like. So every article I link to will be a collection of samples of some design style or trend. In a way it just means the potential content base on DMD is much larger. It also means the community at large can participate.
In the end, if your looking for content in the same style as the original DMD you will still find it.
